Character Information
Name: The Guardian
Series: Hyper Light Drifter
Appearance: Dressed entirely in bright pinks and teals, Guardian cuts a large, visually loud, somewhat imposing figure wherever they go. Never without their helmet or fur-lined cloak, it's not often that one will get the chance to see their ashy gray hair tinted with undertones of green, or their blue skin.
Age: Late 30s.

Canon Point:
After their death in the southern zone.
Canon History: wiki here
Loss will spur people to do ridiculous things. Guardian, for example, traveled across entire continents at the behest of a canine deity after sickness robbed them of their family, and became entangled in a strange land's decline as the aforementioned deity urged them to free her from her mortal shackles.

Uh, you know, the usual.

Being a drifter, Guardian was quick to find a place in the continent known as Buried Time. What they weren't was entirely willing to actually fulfill the task set before them -- to collect divine keys scattered across the land and destroy the festering cell rotting underneath the earth's surface -- and they settled for becoming a self-assigned protector of Buried Time's central town.

Not that it was easy. The history of Guardian's race is a complex one in the context of Buried Time; its native inhabitants had become the victims of their own hubris, setting catastrophe upon the land in an attempt to gain access to immortal life -- thus creating the Immortal Cell. In the process, a brewing war had prompted the southern people to create a race of soldiers. Animal-adjacent mobs named Dirks were created, and then...people. People with blue skin.

After the conclusion of the war over who should have the right to use and control the Cell, attitudes toward the blueskins were hostile -- an attitude which carries to present time. In Central, there's an NPC known as "the Drunk" who will tell the story of their arrival to BT, upon which they were immediately assaulted and robbed of everything they had.

Amidst the tension, Guardian was sick themself. No manner of peace was ever meant to last. Even as another drifter joined their midst, more eager to complete their task than Guardian ever was, they felt their own strength weakening, and they did their best to scout out the surrounding areas for Modules: the keys to unlocking the cell towards Judgement, and the Immortal Cell itself. Guardian offered information in the form of map updates whenever their and Drifter's paths crossed, showing the modules that they'd uncovered.

Their sickness eventually got the better of them, though, and they fell to a hostile war construct in the zone just south of the town. Sometimes the taste of regret burns in your mouth even stronger than blood.

Canon Personality:
Introverted and somewhat aloof, Guardian pulls off the "strong, silent type" to an absolute T. They can be horribly socially awkward -- being a drifter, someone whose primary focus is recovering lost cultures and delving into hostile territories -- does not often make one terribly prone to being good at conversation. But they have a good heart, always willing and ready to help those in need. They take the unconscious Drifter, a complete stranger, into their home upon finding him unconscious in the woods, and with the alternate player character also waking up in Guardian's house, it's implied that they make rescuing strays a habit.

...Even if their idea of helping tends to end after that, and simply using their sword on the problem. When the player wakes in Guardian's house, they'll find Guardian is nowhere to be seen, and upon speaking to an NPC, they'll tell you of how Guardian helped them and their friend in the midst of a monster attack, slaying the beasts; however, Guardian doesn't stick around past making sure the two townspeople are alright before leaving immediately.

They're a seeker of knowledge, and will go out of their way to discover new things and recover things they feel are important. Their house is full of crates, gear, and data modules, kept in better repair than the actual house itself. Guardian is also an adept cartographer, being the one responsible for the map available in the game; what's more rewarding than scouting out a new place, being the first person to record its insides and make something that will help others?

Personality Shifts:
Guardian's life can take two paths, depending on whether the Drifter interacts with them. If they're left alone, Guardian will remain unchanged. If Drifter talks to them, however, Guardian's illness will progressively become worse, until they're unable to fight properly and they perish in a skirmish.

This Guardian is of the latter.

Guardian has always done their best to remain distant with other people after their family died. They never expected, however, to stumble across another drifter with the same quest in their heart, and found themself hopeful of a future free from the sickly glowing pink of hyperlight.
But sometimes hope can hurt just as much as despair.

Abilities:
 • Guardian is skilled with a gun and can fire accurately even in high-speed and hectic combat situations.

 • They're a skilled strategist and very experienced in reconnaissance

 • Experience in combat means they're capable of engaging with multiple opponents at once.

 • Dash. Could probably also be listed under "inventory" because the ability is granted through the boots they wear, but could also be an ability because of utility. The tech plates built into their boots allow them to cross gaps spanning up to four feet, with the same ability allowing them to chain these dashes and cross large distances very quickly. Ability is already somewhat nerfed because their sickness doesn't allow them the stamina to pull either move often, but chain dashes could be limited per day and distance per dash could be lessened.

Inventory:
 1. Companion bot: a small robot capable of supporting itself in the air, with a functional AI. Guardian's bot is primarily used for data storage and display. Large chunks of said data would likely become missing/corrupt upon arriving on the island, at the very least.
 2. Pistol: Carries up to 6 charges at a time. Needs no physical ammunition, the mag is linked to their sword and is recharged through kinetic energy; when Guardian hits something with the sword, it charges the gun. Could be nerfed so the pistol's mag is halved and/or has a cooldown to being charged again.
 3. Hard-light sword: Slightly glowy and very sharp. The blade can be dispersed to make it easier to carry around.
 4. Cloak: Guardian's cloak grants them minor stamina enhancement, which is necessary due to the mobility-limiting nature of their illness; wearing it doesn't give them stamina or energy greater than that of the average person, but instead allows them to operate at the level a healthy person would in their line of work.
Q&A:

Are all lives equal, or are some lives more important than others?

[The question seems to irk them. Or maybe you can't tell, with the way their helmet hides any expression. Their voice certainly barely betrays anything.] It's not any one person's right to decide how much someone's life is worth. The true importance comes from the actions one takes. [They incline their head slightly. They don't seem to be entirely aware that they're doing it.] Be them bad or good.

How valuable do you consider your own life to be?

[Barely stifled as the huff of amusement is, at least it's stifled.] Enough so that I would like not to lose it. [They say nothing of the value of their life compared to another's. They've certainly thrown themself in the line of danger to protect others enough; surely that question has been answered many times over by now.]

What kind of person do you find worthy of respect?

["Worthy" is certainly an interesting word to use, but they won't comment on that. Their answer is simple.] Anyone who puts all of themself into what they do will have my respect, I think. Dedication is always admirable.
If you were given the chance to live forever while everyone around you died, would you take it? Why or why not?

[Silence, for several long seconds. It almost seems like they're not going to answer before they speak, somewhat gruffly.] True immortality isn't escaping death. It's others remembering you and the things you've done. Having your stories passed down. Leaving a mark. [They glance around. Wary of someone else overhearing, perhaps.] To be immortal in the way you ask is to die forever.

Is it difficult for you to trust others? If so, why?

...I don't need to trust. [Guardian crosses their arms over their chest.] People will either be honest, or they will not, regardless of whether with words or actions. To be prepared for both possibilities is simply being realistic. [That's a big fat stinking "yes" if there's ever been one. GG. ]

Do you have a personal code you follow? Why or why not?

Never attack first without reason. Take what is offered. Don't...ah. [They squint.] Live in fear? [And then they shrug.] These things keep you alive. You can't do what you need to if you're dead.

Do you have any spiritual or religious beliefs? If so, what are they?

Religious? No. [This question is answered readily.] Belief stems from faith, and faith implies doubt. There's nothing to doubt about the existence of the gods I have encountered. I suppose I like to think that the people who came before live on through us, but that's as far as any spirituality goes.
